I’ve heard Christians talk about pastoral care. What is it?
Pastoral care is the compassionate caring ministry of spiritual leaders for people. It can involve anything from showing personal interest to counselling. It is a way of listening. Showing a pastoral interest in others means becoming an active listener. Someone has said that it is the most powerful form of listening. Why? Because it sends a signal that you’re interested in and absorbing what the other person is saying. It is also a way to encourage others. It is letting people know that they are supported personally and in prayer. Such caring is focused on the person’s behaviour, emotional health and spiritual wellness. In this sense, it is a holistic ministry, encouraging people to live life to the full, reach their potential and face life with hope. The concept of a pastor comes from the image of the shepherd who cares for the sheep, protecting, strengthening the weak, tending to their needs, refreshing and restoring the flock. Psalm 23 from the Bible, is a wonderful example of this
