Nanotechnology has been getting a lot of attention for the many diverse fields in which it has promising potential applications to improve; and, in some cases, revolutionize our lives. Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous people who are trying to wrap themselves with credibility by attaching the “nano” phrase to whatever snake oil they are selling. Much like they have used the word “polymer” before it. A polymer only means something that has many parts. To a coatings chemist, it means nothing more than any two or more individual molecules that have been polymerized into a larger molecular chain. A polymer is neither “good” nor ‘bad”. Many people are unaware and therefor impressed by anything that is called a polymer. So it goes with the word nanotechnology or anything with “nano” involved. Nano simply means small. That’s all. Any particle that is measureable in nanometers is a nanoparticle. The REAL benefits of nanotechnology in the coatings field are just beginning to be realize
