Adding on commercial privileges is a little different. Different schools take different approaches to commercial add-ons. At Valley, we recommend that you first get private privileges in helicopters, then get your commercial rating in helicopters. Heres why. Regulations require that you get 20 hours dual instruction, and 10 hours solo. Additionally, the regulations require that you log a total of 150 hours of flight time, 50 hours of which must be in helicopters, and 35 of which must be as pilot in command. As long as youre not rated in helicopters, the only way that pilot-in-command time can be logged is when youre solo. In other words, the absolute bare minimum then becomes 20 hours dual and 35 hours solo. These are the minimums, and an aviator shouldnt expect to meet all of the requirements found in 61.129 and be at a proficiency level sufficient to pass the commercial practical test in 55 hours.
