Ive been bulking for a while and I avoid fruit and stick with all whole wheat carbs in my meals, how do carbs from fruit differ, and do they cause a spike in insulin?
Fructose is not utilized by muscles the way that glucose and dextrose are. These other simple sugars are readily converted to muscle glycogen, the form of carbohydrates that are stored in muscles. Having well-stocked muscle glycogen stores helps you recover and grow and helps you perform better at your next workout. It also gives muscles a full appearance. The enzyme that regulates whether carbs are stored as glycogen or fat is phosphofructokinase-I. The job of this enzyme is to shuttle carbs into glycogen stores until full, then switch the flow of carbs from glycogen synthesis to fat synthesis. Fructose, however, skips this step and must travel directly to the liver before it can be converted to glycogen. The problem with fructose arises when your liver glycogen levels are full, and during bulking, your liver is probably almost always full. At this point, fructose gets converted to fat and is stored, which increases the size of your fat cells. Also, fructose raises blood sugar very sl
