Monitoring of commercial poultry flocks in Virginia is conducted by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). Backyard poultry growers (defined as 500 birds or less grown for the use of the owners) are not routinely monitored by VDACS, but are advised to follow USDA and VDACS guidelines regarding disease prevention. By mandate of the State Veterinarian (VDACS – Low-Path Avian Influenza Proclamation), Avian influenza (AI) testing is required for movement of individual “backyard” poultry into the Commonwealth. However, there is no program in place that requires testing of “backyard” flocks currently present. Additionally, veterinarians and veterinary laboratories are required to report ANY cases of High or Low Pathogenic avian influenza in birds that they treat within 24 hours after suspicion of illness – regardless of where the poultry was grown.
