As a technology, RFID has been around for quite a long time. The auto industry has been using this technology for over 10 years now in different theft prevention devices. The application of RFID technology that we are focusing on deals with the EPC standards, and the EPC network. These standards are more than just RFID tags; they are a global network that provides the history of a unique serial number through out different location in the world. To accomplish this, RFID technology is used. This is completely different from previous types of applications of RFID. Other than the hardware involved, I was under the impression that RFID tags were just like bar codes? This is not exactly accurate. The EPC network offers much more to the a supply chain than todays bar codes do. In a way, a RFID tag is similar to a bar code in that it is used to identify an item, but that is about where the similarities end.
