Isn religion the cause of great suffering and violence?
Much blood has been shed in the name of religion. But history’s sanguinary prize goes to secular zealots, from the French Revolution through Communism and National Socialism. Violence actually has little to do with religion or with whatever ideological rationalization people offer for killing. It has a lot to do with the need to feel important by standing on someone else’s head.
