Isn’t poverty the root cause of deforestation in Amazonia?
No. This oft-repeated global generalization does not apply to Brazil. While poor people do clear some forest in order to plant food crops for their survival, this form of clearing represents only a small part of the clearing in Brazilian Amazonia. Large and medium ranches account for most deforestation. This creates an opportunity to substantially reduce the rate of deforestation.
