Isn municipally treated water safe?
Most well operated municipal treatment plants in the U.S. produce water of acceptable bacteriological and aesthetic quality. However, they may not be equipped to monitor for protozoan cysts of Giardia and Cryptosporidia or to monitor the organic chemical content. Additionally, after the water leaves the treatment plant it can become recontaminated within the distribution system. In fact, more cases of Cryptosporidiasis and Giardiasis have occurred on municipally treated water than on raw water.
