Isn mastectomy the most secure treatment for breast cancer or DCIS?
Generally mastectomy and lumpectomy with radiation are equally effective in terms of long-term survival. Women who have lumpectomy (with radiation) will need careful follow-up to detect local recurrence in the breast. But even if the woman has a recurrence her survival rate is the same as the woman who had a mastectomy.
