Yes and no. For example, other groups do monitor legislative topics in Maine and respond to those that matter to the saltwater fishing world. Maine Charterboat Captains, however, make at least a portion of their livelihood from the coastal waters. While our concerns for the waters and the fish might often mirror those of other groups, there are occasions when a “trade association” might earn its keep. It seems inevitable, for example, that Mainers will be faced with the saltwater license. And our official response to such a revenue source for the State might well match that of another group. But we, as Guides and Captains, need to be sure that the legislature considers our interests as well. We are often the source of the tourists access to the fishery. Without our voice the legislature might not consider the wisdom and efficiency of a boat license, for example, whereby the Guide/Captain would purchase a master license that would cover all of his/her clients for the season.
