As with every software, there is a huge difference in quality between the programs. Off course there is free software that’s inferior to commercial software, however that’s not necessarily the case. In fact there’s plenty of free software that’s equivalent or even superior to commercial software. Plus, being free of charge it’s safe to try several free programs to see which is the best.
