Isn Coaching just a posh word for Counselling?
No coaching is not counselling. There are clearly core skills involved in counselling and coaching, such as listening and asking questions. However, counselling is concerned with the individual and with the relationship between the individual and the context in which he/she operates; his family and community, and since most counselling is remedial the intent is to help the individual become whole and to find their place with their family and community. Coaching takes into consideration the task or work that the individual is engaged in. Coaching is concerned with the individual, the relationship between the individual, their task or work and the context (the organisation) the individual works in, and community, although typically, these become a matter for discussion only if they are inhibiting performance.
