Isn’t amending the Constitution an extreme step?
Yes. Amending the Constitution is a serious move that should only be undertaken in cases of extreme necessity. No such need has been demonstrated here. The First Amendment and other provisions of the Bill of Rights guarantee all Americans a broad array of freedoms. Our nation should protect these freedoms, not restrict them by adding provisions to the Constitution that reflect the passing whims, momentary obsessions and ever-changing agendas of a politically aggressive portion of the American religious community.
