Is World of Goo New Media?
There are a number of ways World of Goo touches on the concept of new media, but whether or not the game is in fact new media is debatable. First, World of Goo in highly creative and interactive. They player is transformed into a completely new goo world. The graphics, reminiscent of Tim Burton’s animations, are vibrant and the audio places the player into the game. The goo balls also directly engage the player as they rely on the creativity of the player to create. The bridges, ladders, and webs created by the player change every time as the player makes building decisions. Each click therefore can change the outcome of the game. Second, World of Goo incorporates physics laws into the game so that each bridge, ladder, or web must conform to the laws of physics in order to exist. Third, the distribution of the game as a download and viral component of the game could in fact make the game new media. It is therefore available in a variety of different formats, but ultimately it does not
