Is waste set out for recycling being sent to landfill sites?
The materials you put out for recycling are still being recycled. The recycling services we provide for our residents remain unaffected by the current drop off in demand for recycled materials. Where does the waste that people put out for recycling go to? So far this year (2009/10) Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has collected 3968.39 tonnes of waste for recycling. This includes 1399 tonnes of paper, sent to UK and European paper mills; 1091 tonnes of glass sent to UK reprocessors; and 736 tonnes of plastic sold on the global market. In the Moorlands we collect most of your recycable materials in one compartment of our vehicles and have them sorted out at the Viridor materials recycling facility (MRF) into separate material streams which can then be sent for reprocessing. Only a very small proportion of the mixed material cannot be sorted out in this way, such as incorrect materials which residents have put in which are not accepted on the recycling scheme.
