Is VSNL planning to enter National Long Distance (NLD) service?
VSNL has an NLD licence, which it is implementing and already carrying some NLD calls in a limited way between, I think, Mumbai – Delhi and a few other centres. But by about March 2003, they would have a bigger presence. Will Tata Teleservices merge with VSNL in the coming months? Nothing But is the idea of a possible merger between the two being discussed? If you are a professional financial advisor, will you advise me that I should look at it sometime? If companies are in similar lines of business, if it makes sense that we should merge at sometime, we will of course look at it. But as of now we have no plans because VSNL has just been acquired (by the Tatas), Tata Teleservices is still rolling out its services. Things would have to stabilise a bit before we look at other options. We are already trying to take advantage of the synergies. The managements of VSNL and Tata Teleservices try and do things together. We try to lay the same backbone so that we do not duplicate it. Naturally
