Is VPN (Virtual Private Networking) a necessity for county offices?
Technically, an office could contract with a local ISP and not contract with EIT for network equipment or VPN service. However, doing so has serious repercussions. Without VPN, a county office would not have access to remote assistance from EIT, file sharing, or automatic updates from campus. In addition, an office that does not use VPN would not have network equipment or network support from EIT and desktop support would be more complex, problems might take longer to solve, and the support that could be offered might be limited.
