Is VOIP call quality worse than PSTN or ISDN?
Early versions of VOIP had a somewhat bad reputation, which stemmed from early soft phone and messenger client problems & of course slower internet services. The quality of the call depends on the speed of the internet connection and the compression method in use. Early compression methods resulted in a reasonable amount of loss hence quality suffered. Later compression techniques have greatly lowered the amount of bandwidth required to carry a call & offer good call quality. Modern Routers are VOIP aware, and are able to give VOIP traffic high priority. These changes in technology & todays internet speeds make a VOIP call indistinguishable from a conventional ISDN or PSTN call.
