Is violence against women a big problem in the United States?
Violence against women is everywhere. It is the most common crime in our country. It affects women from all age groups, religions, socioeconomic classes, and cultural backgrounds. The threat or experience of violence is a daily reality for the majority of women. A study by the Family Violence Prevention Fund revealed that: • A woman is abused every nine seconds in the U.S. • 1 out of every 2 women will be physically abused by their partner at least once • Almost 4 million American women were abused by their husbands or boyfriends in the last year alone • 4,000 women and children are beaten to death each year in the U.S.
