Is using something past its sell-by date dangerous?
Sell by dates give the last date that a food will be at it’s best. After that date the food should still be OK, but may not be quite as good. It’s a matter of being sensible and seeing what it’s like when you open it. In a batter mix the raising agent may not work quite as well, so the batter may be slightly heavier. Use by dates are on things like meat and dairy. These things get seriously horrible after the use-by date. On an aside I’d suggest making your own batter. It’s a lot cheaper and not at all difficult: 1 egg, 4 ounces/100g of plain flour and 1/2 a pint of milk. Whisk them up until it has no more lumps. Simple.
To me we usually have two dates to consider, one of course is the sell by date, the other the use by date. I don’t think any firm would cut these dates a little fine, so you always have a few days in hand. Then again if you freeze, I must admit many things in my freezer are well out of their date but have never been problem. I am however very careful about freezing and re freezing, this I will not do.
