Is using something past its sell-by date dangerous?

Sell by dates give the last date that a food will be at it’s best. After that date the food should still be OK, but may not be quite as good. It’s a matter of being sensible and seeing what it’s like when you open it. In a batter mix the raising agent may not work quite as well, so the batter may be slightly heavier. Use by dates are on things like meat and dairy. These things get seriously horrible after the use-by date. On an aside I’d suggest making your own batter. It’s a lot cheaper and not at all difficult: 1 egg, 4 ounces/100g of plain flour and 1/2 a pint of milk. Whisk them up until it has no more lumps. Simple.

To me we usually have two dates to consider, one of course is the sell by date, the other the use by date. I don’t think any firm would cut these dates a little fine, so you always have a few days in hand. Then again if you freeze, I must admit many things in my freezer are well out of their date but have never been problem. I am however very careful about freezing and re freezing, this I will not do.

Typically a product with a Sell by date dictates the date that the product is in its best state and quality. You would need to be careful with anything eaten past its “Use by” date however as this dictates the potential for food borne bacteria to multiply and will ive you food poisoning.

mmm yh there is a difference between sell by and use by usually it has a date like instead of April 2008 , it would say 20th of April 2008 mm as long as it’s not too much out of date surely it can’t hurt it’s a def no no to use in 2009 lol

Use by date = do not use after or you will get ill Best before or sell by = the product may not be at its best after this date but will not make you ill.
