Is using layer 4 switch or special router necessary for transparent operation?
No; the CacheQube can handle transparent caching itself. The only thing necessary is for client traffic to be routed through the CacheQube. Using an L4 switch is a good way to add caching capacity, as well as being intrinsically more fault-tolerant (switches, for example, have no disks that can fail).
