Is urinary incontinence a difficult issue for men?
A. Yes, men feel less open to talk about these issues after surgery. They feel isolated about it. It’s very personal to men. Many get depressed and devastated by the problem. Frankly, women are better at communicating these issues. It is a great satisfaction for me to treat them for incontinence and give them their lives back. It is very gratifying. One of my goals is education. There are options for men with these side effects and they need to know about them. Q. How do you treat urinary incontinence? A. There are about three or four basic procedures. One of them is the sling procedure – a device made of strong and porous mesh that is similar in some respects to the female sling. It often stops urine from leaking out and supports and gently compresses. Then there is the artificial urinary sphincter which restores competence completely. Q. And erectile dysfunction? A: We see ads on this all the time. There are oral medications and also injections. There is penis prosthesis surgery – a
