Is upside down storage of hatching eggs advisable?
Eggs are usually delivered to the hatchery with their small ends down. They are also stored that way. Extended storage results in a substantially larger air cell and in a thinner albumen. This allows the yolk to flow and to make contact with the air cell. The germinal disc on top of the yolk can stick to the air cell membrane. This will almost certainly cause the death of the embryo. Therefore, for longer periods of storage, it might be advisable to store hatching eggs with their small ends up. Attention: Make sure the egg is not handled in this position, since this can cause the air cell to rupture.
