Is University Laboratory School licensed, and by whom?
The lab school is licensed by the Ministry of Children & Youth Services under the Day Nurseries Act. Originally passed in 1946 and updated three times since, the Act established minimum standards including physical space, staff qualifications, child to staff ratio, health and safety, nutrition and basic programming. It provides the Ministry the authority to issue the lab school’s license. Every year, a Ministry representative pays an unannounced day-long visit to the lab school, using the Day Nurseries Licensing Checklist to guide her observations. The lab school’s license is posted at the entry of the school. Included in this process is confirmation of an annual safety check of the outdoor playspace and its equipment, as well as inspection reports from the Public Health Nurse and the Infectious Disease Control Inspector, both of the Middlesex-London Health Unit.
