Recent policy statements by leading European Union authorities seem to suggest that transatlantic energy research policies are drawing ever closer together. The closer ties are focused on the hydrogen-based economy and fuel cell technology in which the United States is keen on investing USD1.7 billion over the next five years. It also applies to nuclear energy to which the US is trying to appeal by making investment easier, whilst the Europeans are keen on pressing on with research in this realm by, for example, subscribing to the American Generation IV scheme. “Clean coal” also has supporters on both sides of the Atlantic and represents the future for the coal industry, at a time when decisions are due to be taken about replacing capacities available on both…
