There is nothing wrong with either UMass Amherst or UMass Lowell. They do tend to get overshadowed in Mass. by places like Harvard, MIT, and etc, but they are solid schools. UMass Amherst far outranks Lowell. UMass Amherst ranks in the top 100 universities in the US. UMass Lowell is lower ranked. So yes, UMass Amherst is a really good college. That doesn’t mean that Lowell sucks, but Amherst has a clear advantage in reputation and ranking. On a more personal level, UMass Amherst has more to offer, on campus and off. My husband went to Lowell, and transferred to UMass Amherst. He said that Lowell “Is what it is,” in that it’s okay, a lower tier school that’s okay, but UMass Amherst has far more, again, quoting him, “bang for the buck.” (He’s sitting next to me now. I called in a consult :winks: ) He considered Amherst a stronger school, with a lot more to offer re: opportunities, both academic and social.
