Is ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound has been used for over 35 years in obstetrics with no documented adverse effects to human babies. Countless studies have shown it to be a non-invasive tool with vast benefits. Some doctors use it as part of every routine prenatal visit. We strictly adhere to the standard set by the FDA which “restricts ultrasound exposure to levels that produce few, if any, effects on the fetus, based on epidemiological evidence” (FDA Consumer magazine, January-February 2004 Issue). Our Three- and Four-Dimensional ultrasound imaging uses ultrasound energy subject to these same limits and is not a product of increased frequency or “power” levels, but a combination of increased data gathering (listening) by the transducer and software interpretation after data acquisition. The result is a vast array of benefits without any harm to mother or baby. For further information, please see the “Safety of Ultrasound” section of our website.
The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicines official statement: No confirmed biological effects on patients or instrument operators caused by exposure at intensities typical of present diagnostic ultrasound equipment have ever been reported. Although the possibility exists that biological effects may be identified in the future, current data indicates that the benefits to patients outweigh the risk, if any, that may be present.
Yes, In the 35 years of use in medicine, there has never been a harmful effect shown by the use of ultrasound. Prenatal ultrasounds have been used with confidence by the medical community and are common practice throughout pregnancy to monitor the development of the foetus. Many women have multiple ultrasounds during their pregnancy with no negative effect on the baby. Women who are having trouble with pregnancy may have as many as two or three ultrasounds per week late in the third trimester.
Ultraound has been used for over 40 years and there has been no indication of any harmful effects to the baby or mother from it. There is no radiation involved. In 3D/4D scanning exactly the same type and intensity of Ultrasound is used as with conventional 2D scanning. 3D and 4D Ultrasound both utilize sound waves to look inside the body. The technology is similar to radar. A probe placed on the body emits sound waves into the body, listens for the return echo and generates an image. Peek A Baby follows FDA guidelines for time and soundwave intensity.
