As a member of a Trotskyist party (the Socialist Party) – we don’t refer to ourselves as “far left”, but rather as “hard left”. I will try to explain the differences. We call ourselves “hard left” to distinguish ourselves from the Green Party “soft left”, which has no principles to speak of. We rigidly stick to our principles, but we are flexible in tactics – how these are explained to people. Trotsky developed a transitional programme, which he described as a bridge between capitalism and socialism. We need to start from where people are now and persuade them that capitalism cannot deliver for society – it is chaotic, unplanned and serves the interests of a few at the top whilst the vast majority of people on this planet are living in poverty. Instead, socialism would be egalitarian, truly democratic, with workers in control rather than bosses, with leaders on the same wage as ordinary people and with the right to recall if they are in any way corrupt or dishonest.
