Is toe walking in autism spectrum mostly related to sensory problems?
Answer Hi Angela, It is assumed that toe walking has to do with sensory overload when the whole foot contacts the ground or sole of the shoe. The primary problem is that the Achille’s tendon tends to shorten over time. Some people end up not being able to put the heel on the ground at all. Also, the increased pressure on the ball of the foot may lead to arthritis or other joint problems. As to the proper corrective shoe or brace, I will have to defer to an orthepedic doctor or podiatrist. I found this article with a web search. I’m sure there are others.
