Is there too much vitamin B12 in supplements?
Fantastic question, Sarah! The daily values (in North America we call them RDIs or recommended daily intakes) of the various nutrients are what’s required to prevent frank pathology. (For example: The RDI for Vitamin C is the intake required to prevent developing scurvy.) These should not be confused with optimal levels. Make sense? With respect to B12… this is a vitamin that is ONLY available from animal sources. If you’re vegan, you’re not getting any B12 at all in your diet. (If you want to get dietary B12, consider adding eggs and/or dairy to your meals.) Now… there are toxicities involved with super high doses of B12. But since this vitamin is water-soluble, oral/sublingual/dietary intake of B12 makes it all but impossible to achieve the levels that would be required for toxicity. Injections or parenteral administration of B12 would be required to reach those ranges. The issue of multi-vitamins is a whole other story… (most dont contain enough of any given nutrient to make t
