Is there surveillance for HPAI H5N1 for Ohio’s wild birds?

0

Yes, the Ohio Division of Wildlife has and will continue to sample waterfowl and wild birds for early detection of avian influenza viruses. In cooperation with Dr. Richard Slemons from The Ohio State University, cloacal swab samples have been collected from waterfowl in Ohio for the past 20 years. Dr. Slemons is a world renowned avian influenza expert and has one of the most extensive data sets of avian influenza samples in the world. Dr. Slemons’ study protocols are consistent with the recommendations for avian influenza sampling established through the National Strategic Plan for early detection of HPAI H5N1. Dr. Slemons will continue to sample waterfowl in cooperation with the Division of Wildlife’s Crane Creek Research Station. Expansion of the sampling effort will be consistent with the protocols established for State Wildlife agencies through the Mississippi Flyway Strategy.
