Is there support for lowering the legal drinking age?
According to a 2007 Gallup poll, 77 percent of Americans would oppose a federal law that would lower the drinking age to 18. Further, 60 percent of Americans favored even more strict penalties for underage drinking. (Carroll, J. (2007). Most Americans oppose lowering legal drinking age to 18 nationwide. Its support today is nearly identical to its level then — 79 percent in a Gallup poll in June ’84.” (Cohen, J. (2005). Poll: Public back legal drinking age limit. ABC News/Washington Post.
