Is there such a thing as internet addiction?
If a person has signs of long term neglect (like a chronically filthy living space) or is screwing up their lives (missing work, eating poorly, not paying bills), then they may be an ‘internet addict’. A friend might call you an ‘internet addict’ if you seem to stop hanging out with them and start spending more time on the computer, too…you must consider the source. There is nothing wrong with spending a lot of time with something that fascinates you if you are ‘taking care of business’ (working, paying the bills, staying healthy). A pastime becomes an addiction when it becomes harmful to the user, but exactly what is ‘harmful’ is open to a wide interpretation. The same behavior displayed by an ‘internet addict’ (staying up all night, eating poorly, personal space getting messy, can’t think of anything but the computer…) is the behavior that you see in the most brilliant programming genius’s in the middle of a project…some of these guys made millions of dollars…!!
