Is there such a thing as a male menopause?
Well, no. Since ‘menopause’ means the end of menstruation, the term ‘male menopause’ doesn’t make sense. Men do experience a drop in levels of the hormone testosterone from midlife onwards, but it’s much more gradual (about 2% per year) than the steep, sudden fall in hormone levels experienced by women (oestrogen falls by 90% over a few years). Research on the effects of lowered testosterone in men is underway, but most researchers believe ‘menopause’ is not, for blokes, an appropriate term.
