Is there social pressure on Chinese students to refrain from interacting with non-Chinese students?
American and European students typically ostracize foreigners. Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern, and other foreign students are rarely accepted as friends by Americans and Europeans. It’s a shame, but it’s true. The students from China are focused on their studies and typically graduate near or at the top of their class. They go on to law school, medical school, or a PhD program. As the years pass, the Chinese students emerge as professionally successful and wealthy. Their days of being a college outsider are forgotten, also forgotten are the people who ostracized them. Meanwhile at Tesco and Walmart, many of the people who thought they were cool by making fun of foreign students are enjoying their careers as stock clerks. Mindlessly stacking boxes of toilet paper for the rest of their lives, these losers look back on their lives with regret.
