Is there scientific evidence for gut feelings?

“gut feelings” has nothing to do with the innervation of your intestinal tract. It is just an emotional response. However, when you feel anxious, worried or otherwise over-emotional, there may be hormone responses and changes in the activity of the parasympathetic pathways, as part of the “fight or flight” response. This may leave you with the common feeling of “butterflies in the stomach” for example. Blood gets diverted away from the intestines, and more to the skeletal muscles, heart lungs and brain. Gut feelings, hunches, your “sixth sense”….whatever you want to call it, is a very complex interaction of your past experience and biases, combined with subtle (subclinical) awareness of your usual 5 senses as well as the neuro-hormonal responses mentioned above. Much of this can be measured with various technologies in existence. There is no evidence that there is any supernatural or paranormal phenomena or energy in play when people make decisions based on their “gut instincts”. Mak
