Is there reason to believe that medical science will liberate mankind from bondage to death?

Yes, but I believe it will be a mixture of advances in medical science as well as advances in nano-robotics. Scientists estimate in 30 years that nanobots will be created that can be injected into your blood stream. From there they can act as intelligent white blood cells killing anything they believe is harmful from bacteria, to cancerous cells. Some of these nanobots will be “task masters” communicating to the cells to continue working in a normal fashion even as you age. And finally, in 40 years they estimate they will be able to use nanobots that will enter your brain and scan it, thus creating an “image file” of your brain. From there it would be possible to write this “image file” onto the brain of a body that has been cloned for you. You won’t live forever, in the sense that your body will die, but your consciousness could live on as long as you want it to.
