Is there really any such thing as a blue moon?

The term “blue moon” began when Krakatoa blew its top and made the moon actually take on a bluish tint for awhile. Since an eruption like that is rare, anything rare is now spoken of as a blue moon. As referring to only the moon, two full moons are rare in a given month and thus the second one is called a blue moon.

A blue moon is just a weird name for an extra full moon. There are normally 12 full moons a year, but every two or three years there is a 13th full moon. This full moon is called a blue moon even though it is not actually a blue colored moon. I have no idea why they named it that though.

“Blue Moon” is a farmers term used to discribe the second full moon in a month. It’s somewhat of a rarity.
