Is there one preeminent skill or area of knowledge that students must develop for future success?
You can’t just have one. There are different models. Unfortunately, there are lots of people who succeed by being jerks. As I said, personality is still going to be important. It’s not going to be this digital world of intelligence and numbers. That’s going to be part of it. A technical education is important, but it’s not everything. Social skills are not going to vanish or be less important. You were quoted in the San Jose Mercury News as saying that universal access would be attainable and desirable if we first reached another goal of universal decent education. That’s a wonderful statement, but we have a long way to go. How do you think we can achieve this goal? I don’t think we can, but we should keep trying.
