Is there new info about bacterial causes of IBD and colitis?
Tagged As: Colitis Type Question: This was my understanding of IBD: Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s are not caused by any bacteria that can be identified. There are many different bacteria that are normally found in the intestine and some that aren’t and both can cause diarrhea and colitis type symptoms but are not the same as CD or UC. These bacteria (such as C. difficile and E. coli) are differential diagnoses for IBD but are not the cause of IBD. We take antibiotics such as flagyl and cipro to prevent fistula formation and overgrowth of bacteria that may cause secondary infections of the abdomen etc (because an inflamed gut wall is more leaky and permeable to bacteria).
