Is there more prestige associated with private universities?

If you are interested in graduate school (including law programs), then the quality of the school that you attended as an undergraduate is extremely important. While others here claim otherwise — I know this first hand. It is true that the most prestigious universities in the US are private, but there are lots of public universities that are prestigious as well. Berkeley, Michigan, Virginia, UNC and Georgia Tech are better than the majority of private schools. Being a private school doesn’t make a school prestigious. I can’t think of any schools in Florida that I would call prestigious — though there are some that are close. But the University of Florida is the best university in Florida by a wide margin — and it is public.
