Is there life beyond the solar system?

If you are talking about intelligent life then it is very hard to see the whole Universe not having any other life forms but us.

Life by definition as it is here on Earth is unknown to exist outside the solar system. So far, our only criteria is liquid water at the surface to define a habitable planet. AND, only two planetary systems have likely exoplanets or exomoons to host surface water. Gliese 581-d is a super-earth about a red dwarf star, likely habitable, but it will require a greenhouse effect or internal heat generation to make it be so, and it requires a substantially thick atmosphere currently unknown to even make liquid water exist. 55 Cancri-f is a goldilocks gas giant in the parent star’s habitable zone, and while not habitable itself, a possible moon might be.
