Is there just one Airport in Auckland?
Darby street is 20.3 kms and approximate driving time: 18 mins. I got this from NZ best direction website: http://www.wises.co.nz/ Darby Street is in the heart of Auckland City. When you get to Auckland Airport you can either take a bus for $15 to Auckland City which I don’t recomended you taking because you don’t know the area and it will stress you out. I do recomended you taking the shuttle for $26 and that will drop you off at your exact location. Or you can get a cab and that will cost you $50 min lol. Now for the site seeing, you need a car to really experience NZ, but the public transportation is very good down there. When Visiting the South Island, I suggest you buy a domestic airline ticket its really cheap if you buy it 14 days advance.
