Is there good skiing in early season?

The ski areas all open fully on the Saturday before Christmas day, and up to that point there is normally one or two ski area operating or partially opening depending on the snow (Les Grands Montets usually) and up to beginning of December this is normally only at weekends. Again it depends on the snow and how good it is, if good then it may well be open all week and there may be more than one area fully open. Chamonix has one of the best snow records in the Alps and 90% of the skiing is above 2000m making it a good place for early skiing and a good bet for Christmas and New Years weeks. If you are looking for a very cheap break and are happy to risk the snow, or there is reports of early snow and you want a last minute deal, then an early break might be for you as accommodation is much cheaper before 20th December. If you are looking for a cheaper time to ski but want to guarantee that every ski area is open, we would recommend early – late January as another option.
