Is there exercise clothing made specifically for people with diabetes?
“Not really. The major issue is really footwear,” says Dr. Rosen. “Wear good athletic socks; there are no special socks for diabetes, per se. Other clothing should be appropriate for the temperature outside.” Hot weather can be especially problematic, because of the risk of dehydration: “Blood sugar can increase dramatically when someone gets dehydrated.” What about diet? “That’s something to discuss with your nutritionist or physician,” says Dr. Rosen. “Again, eat before exercise to prevent a low blood sugar reaction.” Is there anything else—besides diet and exercise—that people with diabetes can do to live a healthier life? “Appropriate nutrition and exercise are the mainstay of diabetes treatment. Along with that,” says Dr. Rosen, “is taking medications as prescribed. It depends on how well someone’s diabetes is controlled to assess what medications are necessary.
