Is there evidence that taking lactobacillus acidophilus will replace microbes reduced by antibiotics?
There is at least some evidence that replacing the vaginal flora during or after antibiotic use can help prevent yeast infections in some women. The evidence for any benefit of lactobacillus (or other ‘benign’ bacteria) in the gastrointestinal tract is less compelling. There are several studies that show some benefit and others that show no effect. At this time, probably the safest position to take is that using such treatments are unlikely to cause harm and may (in some cases) provide benefit.
