As others have pointed out, due to legislation, London chipperies are no longer allowed to serve fish and chips in yesterdays daily mail – a situation that, while probably good for our health, isn’t nearly as enjoyable. You can, however, still get fish and chips in newsprint (newsprint is a paper similar to that used by the newspapers, but without any ink on it – effectively unused newspaper). You’ll find that mostly in the inner suburbs and smaller country towns. My favourite is Albert’s Plaice (despite the horrible pun) on Brixton Hill in SW2. They also make fantastic chips. (as an aside, there is one chippy that I know of – Harbord Fish and Chips – that still uses actual newspapers. But that’s in Toronto, Canada, so probably not worth the trip just for the experience. However if you are in Toronto (really fun town, by the way) be sure to pop by. It’s a little roadside shack on Harbord St, just west of the University of Toronto.
