Is there anyway to keep my cat from going into heat other than spaying?
There is a drug called Ovaban that can keep female cats from going into heat. The problem is that Ovaban can cause serious side effects including diabetes in cats. So, no reputable veterinarian will advocate Ovaban instead of spaying. Spaying is not expensive (there are low cost spay/neuter clinics) and with modern methods and pain medications, they are usually up and about the next day with little discomfort. There are medical benefits to a spay as well as it decreases the risk of getting mammary (breast) cancer in some small animal species. Please consider spaying your cat. It’s the right thing to do!
