Is there anything special about racing car tyres?
Racing tyres are specifically manufactured to give maximum grip of the road surface in specific conditions. Moreover, they are typically made to suit the charactaristics of a given track surface (some tracks have a surface that wear out the tyres faster, and so on). To get an idea about compounds, if you live in a place where you buy “winter” tyres for, well, winter… the day you change them over to your spring/summer tyres, go for a drive on the dry, warm roads with your winter tyres. Then go do it again with your all weather tyres. You will be able to feel a grip difference; the winter tyres are softer. I had a blast with this some years ago when I lived in Calgary (Canada). They enjoy Chinooks which can raise mid-winter temperatures well past 15°C on days when normal might be 25-degrees colder! Anyway, my winter tyres had phenominal grip in those conditions (the down side is they wear more quickly). I found a bit of an interesting bit about racing tyres and have linked to it in the
